We started Playback back in 2020 with one simple goal in mind: to build a better way to watch sports. In a lot of ways, the internet and social media has made it easier than ever to be a sports fan. There are 10,000+ amazing sports content creators, online communities on Twitter, Discord and Reddit for every niche fan interest, and more than enough highlights to make sure fans never miss a big moment. Yet, there still remains a huge opportunity to innovate around the live watching experience.

“One simple goal in mind: to build a better way to watch sports.”

At Playback, we believe the best way to improve the sports streaming experience is to make it more social. Community is a key competitive advantage for sports. It’s why all of the best ways to watch sports involve watching with other people. That’s the platform we’re building at Playback. We’re integrating creators and communities directly into the broadcast for a much more communal and interactive experience. So what does that mean exactly? To use a real life analogy, what if instead of switching channels to watch different games, you could switch between different sports bars? Click a button and it’s you and 200 Liverpool fans singing and dancing while watching a match. Click again and your favorite Golden State Warriors podcaster is on stage adding their commentary to a game. Press a different button and you’re listening to a DFS expert talk through line ups before NFL RedZone kicks off. That’s how we imagine Playback operating — thousands of different online sports bars, each with their own community, features and creators. Enough sports bars so that every fan can find their own favorite spot, with their favorite creator, community and experience.

“We believe the best way to improve the sports streaming experience is to make it more social.”

That said, we aren’t trying to build this platform on our own. We are extremely excited to officially announce our partnership with the NBA, our first major professional sports league partner. The NBA – committed to delivering unique experiences through a more personalized fan experience on the NBA App – was very quick to see the value of working with creators on Playback to reach the next generation of NBA fans. As part of our partnership, NBA League Pass subscribers will be able to watch live games on Playback while interacting with creators like No Dunks, The Dunker Spot, Nate Duncan, and hundreds more. Fans and creators can also create their own communities on Playback, hosting with their audience or even just a few friends. By partnering with Playback, the NBA can leverage creators and community to increase fan engagement via a more social and personalized streaming experience. Long term, we hope to work with the rest of the sports ecosystem, using Playback’s platform and creators to help leagues and streaming services engage fans in a new and more interactive way.

“We are extremely excited to officially announce our partnership with the NBA.”

We feel like we’re just scratching the surface of this opportunity. By collaborating with creators and leagues, we can build a better way to watch live sports. Over the next few months, we’ll be announcing a host of new features along with more partnerships with rights holders, media networks and creators. Stay tuned!
